different countries, different policies, it seems. all over the world, really.
they could leave it in ruins, could they not? there are ruins all over the world too, figuring as landmarks...
if there's a building contractor behind the effin' idea... find him. sue him!

I agree the cathedral should be saved. There are many ways to restore, you can even save whats is still up and then integrate with something different, if restoring it to the old look is too expensive. I hope there is enough people there to win the battle and get the cathedral, or part of it, back: that's part of your story!

there are some landmarks in each city that represent the sense of community and belonging for its inhabitants - that cathedral is so much more than a new gothic building.

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments. I have looked at all of your lovely CVs on the 'Mother' theme too - and have found all of them beautiful. This has been a really lovely CV to take part in. The word 'mother' is certainly a very evocative one and reverberates very deeply for everyone.

I don't understand either. You're so right about them being irreplaceable. The First United Methodist Church with its dark gray stone, long front portico at the top of twenty steps, the curves of the roofs and stained glass windows in unexpected places---I can't imagine it not being there as I'm sure many in this town could not. We restore, not tear down.

The big Presbyterian church with its ancient red tiles recently had major roof issues. The tiles were cracked, the underlying roof had deteriorated also, so there were leakage problems. The solution was to hire a special company that specializes in such jobs. They took every tile off and stacked them. They replaced the underlying roof and then meticulously put new, plastic tiles on. I did not know they were of a strong, durable plastic until my husband told me. You can't tell the difference from where any of us stand down on the sidewalk! The church still looks magnificent. It was costly, but the church folk had a roof fund and with time and patience and lots of effort, enough money was raised and the roof was fixed.

I'm sorry that this is happening to that magnificent cathedral. I hope that somehow it can still be saved.

I agree with the motherhood sentiment. I too didn't see myself as a mother back in high school when my friends were dreaming weddings and babies. But I'm so blessed that I did become a mother of two: first a daughter and then a son. I am now enjoying seeing my children with their children. It is a special delight to see my daughter with her daughter---she never thought she'd get to have one.
Beautiful photos of all of you.

I love the photos of you, and of motherhood. I also thought I'd never have children, then maybe, then 5 at least, then ... I was very lucky to have three, what a gift!
